Even students who have not read a book in years become captivated by the joy of reading after taking a class taught by Terri Golden. In Ms. Golden’s classes, “Reading is not just a subject. Reading is a foundation for life.”
Reading for information and for enjoyment becomes a self-sustaining activity for Ms. Golden’s students. The process begins with a teacher who models a passion for reading. By demonstrating a genuine concern for students, Ms. Golden is able to instill a genuine excitement for her subject. The process continues until students become self-motivated readers, writers, and critical thinkers.
Recognizing that distractions such as video games and television can lead youngsters away from reading, Ms. Golden engages students with energized discussions of the content and ideas encountered in books. She believes that a positive classroom environment will be more engaging to students than many of the negative messages found in the popular media. She is especially pleased to use the technology of online instruction to create positive interactions between teacher and students.
Ms. Golden has taught at the middle school level for over twelve years. She has served in many additional capacities such as department head and team leader. She was appointed to the position of assistant director for the Florida League of Middle Schools. She has designed and delivered numerous professional workshops, and has involved community leaders, parents and students in school-wide projects.
Ms. Golden earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education and Language Arts 6-9 from the University of Florida. She is ESOL and Gifted certified.
