How does FLVS work?

We're glad you asked. Florida Virtual School is the nation's largest online state public school. As an online school district, our take on education is obviously a little different than most traditional schools. Of course, we’re still a school…a school where the teachers are real, the coursework is real, and the grades students receive are real.

We are all about student choice, freedom, and flexibility. From the moment you become interested in online learning, we are here to help you and your family explore your options and create an educational plan that fits your unique needs. Study at any time. Learn from any place. Choose your schedule. Pick your pace.

No matter what option you choose, our administrative team is glad you’re here! Click here to read our student and parent welcome letter.

Not sure where to start? Let’s break it down.

At FLVS, the student is at the center of everything we do. That’s why we give students and families all kinds of choices when it comes to online learning. Whether you sign up for one or two courses while attending a traditional school through our flexible part-time program, enroll as a homeschool student, or attend our fully-online public school, the opportunities are endless. The great news is that all of our instructional options are FREE to Florida students. Live outside the state? Learn more about our tuition-based program available to students worldwide, FLVS Global.

Our course catalog for middle and high school includes more than 150 courses for Florida students. If you attend a traditional public school, you can take up to three of these courses at any one time, any time during the year. Private school and homeschool students can take up to six courses at once. And enrolling couldn’t be easier! Our registration system is customized for you, based on where you live and your grade level. Ready to get started? Sign up today!

Students in Kindergarten through 12th grade also have the opportunity to enroll in Florida Virtual School Full Time (FLVS FT). With a 180-day calendar that runs from August to June, FLVS FT joins the structure of the traditional school year with the flexibility of online learning. As a fully-online public school, FLVS FT is considered a student’s primary school of record and offers diplomas to graduating seniors.

Student Activities

You may be asking yourself, "How do students stay connected to the world around them?"

Today, a good chunk of social conversation takes place online (or via mobile devices) for students and adults alike. In the business world, online communication skills are invaluable. Of course, we know that students need other ways to connect with their peers, instructors, and the rest of the world, too. That’s why all of our instructional programs provide different ways to stay in touch and get involved.

We offer more than 30 clubs and organized student activities that meet both online and face to face. Our school calendar provides a convenient at-a-glance view of upcoming meetings, webinars, virtual gatherings, games, and more. In-person events and opportunities vary based on what type of student you are, but there are all kinds of options – whether you attend FLVS Full Time, take classes online as a homeschooler, or take one or two courses with us as a public or private school student.

Each course has a real teacher who guides you through the coursework, which is broken down into modules.

Our teachers are readily available via phone, text, email, and other forms of communication — and they love to hear from you! Our customer support team and school counselors are always ready and willing to help too. Get in touch with them on social media to stay connected.

On the middle and high school level, students connect with their teachers to take exams online and discussion-based assessments over the phone as they work through modules for each course. Students study on their own time and schedule and establish a pace that works for them with instructors. Regular calls allow students and their parent/guardian to touch base and ask questions. After completing a course, grades are made available and sent to the student’s school and/or district.

For students who attend FLVS Full Time, our full-time public school for Kindergarten through 12th grade, support is based on the unique needs and grade level of the student. Teachers partner with parents to guide students and lead instruction through live lessons and engaging activities. The same is true for families who participate in our homeschool options.

No matter which path you choose, all FLVS students benefit from the undivided attention of Florida-certified instructors.
