Everything You Need to Know about Taking Advanced Placement® Courses with FLVS

Are you ready to challenge yourself, boost your college applications, and earn college credit – all from the comfort of your home? At Florida Virtual School (FLVS), we have a wide range of Advanced Placement® (AP®) courses, which are available to students in grades 9-12 in both our individual courses  (FLVS Flex) and Florida Virtual Full Time Public Schools (FLVS Full Time) options.

We offer more than 20 AP courses, giving students across the state the opportunity to take accelerated courses that interest them and allow them to challenge themselves. This has been especially helpful for students who don’t have access to a specific AP course in their brick-and-mortar school and can take the course online with FLVS.  

If you’re interested in taking an AP course with FLVS, check out some of the exciting options available. 


Math Marvels: AP Calculus, Precalculus, and Statistics

If you’re passionate about numbers, FLVS offers advanced math courses to take your skills to the next level, including:

  •  AP Precalculus – Strengthen your algebra and trigonometry foundation while preparing for college-level math.

  • AP Calculus AB – Dive into differential and integral calculus. This course is perfect for students who enjoy solving complex equations and want a solid foundation in calculus.

  • AP Calculus BC – Go beyond AB with advanced topics like sequences, series, and parametric equations. This course is ideal for students aiming for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) careers.

  • AP Statistics - Learn how to collect, analyze, and interpret data to make informed decisions in real-world contexts.

Aspiring Entrepreneurs: AP Micro and Macroeconomics

Explore the forces that drive our economy with Micro and Macroeconomics. 

  • AP Microeconomics - Understand how individuals and businesses make economic decisions.

  • AP Macroeconomics (FLVS Flex only) - Study national and global economic systems, including inflation, unemployment, and fiscal policy.

  • AP English Language and Composition – Hone your expository and persuasive writing skills by analyzing and writing various texts.

  • AP English Literature and Composition – Dive into classic and contemporary prose and poetry, analyzing themes, characters, and literary techniques like a pro.

Creativity and Culture: AP Art History

Art lovers, history buffs, and creative minds unite!

  • AP Art History – This course takes you on a journey through time, exploring masterpieces from around the world and the interconnections between art, culture, and historical context. If you enjoy storytelling through visuals, this class is an absolute must.

Tech Titans: AP Computer Science 

Dreaming of a future in tech? FLVS offers two AP courses to help you build a strong coding and problem-solving foundation:

  • AP Computer Science A – Develop the skills to write programs and solve problems using the Java programming language. These skills will help you create understandable, adaptable, and reusable programs.

  •  AP Computer Science Principles – Learn the concepts and challenges of computer science, as well as its impact on society, while stretching your creativity and problem-solving skills. 

Science Superstars: AP Biology and More

If you’re fascinated by the natural world and how life works, check out:

  • AP Biology – In this course, you’ll learn about biological concepts, making it perfect for future doctors, biologists, and environmental scientists.

  • AP Environmental Science - Examine ecological systems, sustainability, and human impact on the planet.

  • AP Psychology - Explore the scientific study of human behavior and mental processes, exploring foundational theories, research methods, and psychological phenomena.

  • AP Physics 1 (FLVS Flex only) - An algebra-based, college-level course that explores motion, energy, momentum, and fluids through inquiry-based investigations and real-world applications.

History Buffs and Future Leaders: AP Social Studies

  • AP World History: Modern – Travel through time and explore key global events from 1200 to the present. You’ll explore themes such as physical environment, human culture, systems of government, economic systems, social classes, and technological innovations.

  • AP United States History - In this course, you’ll develop and use historical thinking skills and reasoning processes to examine the historical developments of the United States from 1491 to the present.

  • AP U.S. Government and Politics – Understand the ins and outs of the U.S. government and how policies shape our nation. You’ll explore the structure and impact of the Constitution, landmark Supreme Court cases, and other foundational documents that influence how government functions today.

  •  AP Human Geography – Discover how humans interact with their environments and the factors that shape societies.

  • AP Psychology - Explore the scientific study of human behavior and mental processes, exploring foundational theories, research methods, and psychological phenomena.


World Languages: 

  • AP Spanish Language & Culture (FLVS Flex only)  - This course promotes fluency and cultural understanding through thematic units and encourages communication in interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational modes.

AP Capstone: AP Seminar and AP Research

Looking for a unique academic challenge that enhances your research and presentation skills? FLVS Flex offers the AP Capstone program to help high school students entering their sophomore or junior year strengthen their college applications and develop strong research and writing skills for success in college and beyond. 

After completing the courses, students may earn their AP Capstone Diploma™ or AP Seminar and Research Certificate from the College Board. For more information, students should speak to their school of record or local home education office, as FLVS Flex does not issue diplomas. 

  • AP Seminar (year 1) - Develop critical thinking, collaboration, and communication skills by analyzing real-world topics from multiple perspectives.

  • AP Research (year 2)  - Take your inquiry to the next level by designing, conducting, and presenting an independent research project on the topic of your choice.

AP Exam

Once you’ve done the work and taken the AP course, it’s time to earn college credit. At the end of the school year, you can take AP Exams at your zoned high school. For more information about the AP Exam, check out our Advanced Placement webpage. Students’ future college or universities will determine college credit based on their AP Exam score.
