Get Free or Low-Cost Behind-the-Wheel Training

Students who complete Driver Education through FLVS will receive the required paperwork and clear instructions on what to take to their area driving school.
Free Training in Select Counties
Students in partner counties who complete the FLVS Driver Education course are eligible for no-cost, in-car instruction through their local schools, county governments, and/or commercial driving schools. Visit the Florida Safety Council for more information.

Starting July 1, 2025, Florida teens under 18 years old are required to complete a state-approved driver education course to obtain a learner's license. Previously, teens only needed to complete a Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) course. The new law, outlined in FL Statute 322.1615, states that minors must complete a full driver education course approved by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV).

All Florida teens under 18 years old who want to obtain a learner’s license.
Previously, teen learner’s license applicants were required to complete a Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) course to apply for a learner’s license. Under the new law, teens must now complete a Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) approved driver education course to be eligible.
The FLVS Driver Education course is a state-approved online course that fulfills the new licensing requirements.
FLVS has been offering a Driver Education course for more than 20 years, and more than 900,000 students have completed it since its inception.
If your child completed a Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) approved driver education course before July 1, 2025, they will meet the new requirement.
If your child only completed a Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) course and not a FLHSMV-approved driver education course, they may need to take a driver education course if they apply for a learner’s license on or after July 1, 2025. The FLVS Driver Education course is available year-round, offering flexibility for students with busy schedules, whether a public, private, charter, or homeschool student. Students can enroll and start at any time through FLVS Flex (individual courses).
There is no cost for the course for public school students, including those enrolled in FLVS Full Time Public Schools (FLVS Full Time), FLVS Flex, or through their County Virtual School.
Students who receive a School Choice Scholarship are no longer considered public school students and must use their scholarship funds to pay for the course, or if funds are depleted, pay for the course out of pocket. Our course is designed to adapt to the student’s license status.
For teens who do not have a learner’s license, driver education is designed to prepare them for the learner’s license exam (Class E Knowledge Exam).
If a student has a learner’s license already, the driver education course includes instruction on passing the driving skills test required to obtain a driver license.
For students who already have a driver license, the course is designed to help students become self-sufficient, risk-reduced drivers.
We have many long-standing, successful partnerships with County Virtual Schools, and we look forward to continuing to work together. The County Virtual Schools are managed by administrators and teachers in that specific school district. These schools use FLVS digital curriculum, educational resources, and technology platforms. They use the FLVS Driver Education course, but are taught by the school’s local teachers.
Yes, you can enroll in our individual course option, called FLVS Flex. This option allows students to enroll in one or multiple courses while attending a public, private, or charter school. Students who are enrolled in public, private, or charter schools must receive approval from their School Counselor to enroll in any FLVS Flex course, including Driver Education.
Students can take the course at any age with a school counselor or parent (if a homeschool student) approval. However, please note that students have to be at least 15 years old to apply for a learner’s license. Visit the FLHSMV website for more information about learner’s license requirements.
Students can work at their own pace, but must be enrolled in the course for at least 14 days from their first assignment. Typically, students complete the course in 9-10 weeks, working approximately 2-3 hours per week. Students can arrange an accelerated schedule with their teacher and finish nearer the two-week mark. Extended schedules are also available if needed. Our mission is to help our students learn to reduce their driving risk in an environment that fits their needs.
The FLVS course provides lessons and simulated driving activities to gain real-world driving knowledge. During the course, students learn:
- Real-world driving knowledge: Through simulated driving activities, students gain practical experience.
- Traffic signs and laws: Understanding how to read traffic signs and the laws that govern our roads.
- Safe driving techniques and skills: Essential skills for collision avoidance and safe driving in various conditions.
- Diverse driving environments: How to navigate different types of roads and weather conditions.
Upon successful completion of the Driver Education Course, students earn the required certification for licensing, and minors 15 years of age and older can take the licensing exam (Class E Knowledge Exam) online for FREE.
After completing the course and earning a learner’s license, students are encouraged to take behind-the-wheel lessons with a local driving school. There are many free and low-cost options throughout the state of Florida. Florida Virtual School provides students with resources for their county.
