General FAQs
Florida Virtual School is the operating education service provider for the Florida Scholars Academy, a unified education system for students assigned to a Florida Department of Juvenile Justice residential commitment program. Governor Ron DeSantis signed legislation creating the Florida Scholars Academy during the 2023 Legislative Session, following the Legislature’s unanimous passage of SB 7014. The local school district, where the residential program is located, previously provided educational services to students living in a DJJ facility.
Residential facilities are for youth who are required by a judge to stay in the care of the Department of Juvenile Justice for an extended time. There are more than 40 DJJ residential facilities across the state. These facilities serve about 2,000 students annually, who are between 13 and 21 years old.
Florida Virtual School will emphasize and prioritize full-time in-person instruction for students. The FSA will primarily focus on the improvement of positive student outcomes through individualized educational pathways with an emphasis on the attainment of a high school or high school equivalency diploma, industry-recognized credential of value to start their career, and/or enroll in a postsecondary program of study at a Florida college, university, or technical college.
Classes begin July 10, 2024.
