Update: Returning to Class after Hurricane Milton

There’s no doubt that Hurricane Milton has had devastating impacts across the state and beyond. While FLVS resumed normal operations today, many students, families, and team members across the state continue to experience localized flooding and/or extended power outages. The journey to recovery will be challenging and lengthy for many.
FLVS understands that this week will look different for everyone. Whether assistance is needed for coping with stress, managing emotions, or connecting with community resources, please read more about the resources available:
Providing Support for Students
Storms can have devastating impacts across the state and beyond, and in extreme situations, students, families, and community members may face significant challenges. Please visit the Storm Resources webpage for recommendations on how to help students during this difficult time.
Additionally, Student Services is offering student groups focused on managing emotions and stress post-storm on Wednesday, Oct. 16.
Support for Team Members
- The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is available 24/7 for counseling and support. It offers a wide variety of services to help address any needs team members may have.
- Division of Emergency Management
- Disaster assistance
- Donations through Volunteer Florida
In addition, the Student Services team is offering a staff session, "After the Storm: Ideas for educators to reset after an emergency event," which will be held on Oct. 18 at 9 a.m.

There’s no doubt that Hurricane Milton has had devastating impacts across the state and beyond. While FLVS will resume normal operations tomorrow (Monday, Oct. 14), many students, families, and team members across the state continue to experience localized flooding and/or extended power outages. The journey to recovery will be challenging and lengthy for many.
FLVS and FlexPoint Virtual School Students
Families who are affected should notify their teacher(s) as soon as possible to ensure their students’ enrollment is not impacted.
Scheduled class time and live lessons for FLVS Full Time students will resume on Tuesday, Oct. 15. FLVS Flex students, please check with your teachers on the live lesson schedule.
Please note, teachers are located throughout the state so there may be delays in responding. If a student’s teacher was impacted by the storm, families will be notified of a temporary point of contact so they may continue working in the course.
All Staff
Team members who have not already done so, should connect with their supervisor today to let them know whether they are safe and able to return to work tomorrow. Supervisors will work with staff to provide additional support, as needed.

Update: FLVS Extends Closure through Friday, Oct. 11 | Courses Remain Accessible

Florida Virtual School is extending operational closures from Wednesday, Oct. 9 through Friday, Oct. 11. Students are not expected to work during the closure; however, courses will still be available for students to continue their school work.
Hurricane Milton will have unprecedented impacts on the west coast of Florida and throughout the state. Students, families, and team members are encouraged to follow the directions of their local municipalities and do whatever is needed to stay safe.
FLVS anticipates that many students, families, and team members will be directly impacted by the storm and understands that they may need additional time to recover. At this time, FLVS plans to resume normal operations on Monday, Oct. 14.
FLVS is working closely with the Florida Department of Education to assist students, schools, and districts who may potentially be experiencing extended school closures.

Update: FLVS Closing - Additional Information
Update Oct. 7 at 4 p.m.
The safety of students, staff, and families are our top priority. While FLVS will be closed on Wednesday, Oct. 9 and Thursday, Oct. 10, students, families, and staff throughout the state may be impacted for longer. At this time, no decision has been made regarding Friday, Oct. 11.
FLVS and FlexPoint Virtual School Students and Families
Class time and live lessons will also be canceled Tuesday, Oct. 8. Students are not expected to work during the closure (Oct. 9 and Oct. 10); however, courses will still be available for those who want to continue working.
Families are encouraged to take necessary precautions to stay safe during the storm. If students or families have any questions or need further assistance, they should contact their FLVS teacher(s) who will respond when normal operations resume.
All Staff
Team members who are evacuating are not expected to work in a situation that requires them to leave their residence, nor are they required to request any time off. Information on evacuation orders can be found on the Florida Disaster.org site.
Team members should take any precautions they feel are necessary to prepare for the hurricane. If a team member feels the need to step away to take care of their family or prepare for this event, they are encouraged to do so.

Update: FLVS to close due to Hurricane Milton

Florida Virtual School will be closed Wednesday, Oct. 9 and Thursday, Oct. 10.
Hurricane Milton is projected to make landfall on the west coast of Florida midweek. FLVS will continue to monitor the storm closely as the safety of students, families, and staff is a top priority.

Students are not expected to work during the closure; however, courses will still be available for those who want to continue working. The Help Desk will also be available.
Students are encouraged to reach out to their teachers upon their return with any questions.

Florida Virtual School will be closed Wednesday, Oct. 9 and Thursday, Oct. 10. Team members should stay in close communication with their supervisor throughout the storm. It is especially important for team members to notify their supervisor if you are evacuating and/or are unable to work on Tuesday, Oct. 8 and/or return to work on Friday, Oct. 11 when normal operations are expected to resume.
Florida Scholars Academy team members will receive separate emails with details specific to their facilities.

Update: FLVS Monitoring Tropical Storm Milton

Florida Virtual School is closely monitoring Tropical Storm Milton. As of today, it is projected to make landfall along the west coast of Florida on Wednesday as a hurricane and cut across the center of the state.
As the storm approaches, please do whatever is needed to remain safe and follow the guidance of local authorities.
