FLVS and NCS Partner to Transform STEM Education with Cutting-Edge Simulation Training
ORLANDO, Fla. (Dec. 6, 2024) — The Florida Virtual School (FLVS) Foundation and the National Center for Simulation (NCS) have partnered to elevate STEM education for FLVS students across the state. This initiative will provide FLVS students enrolled in the full time option with virtual tools like augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), 3D printers, robotics, and various simulators, allowing students in the online learning environment to become more confident in STEM and develop problem-solving skills.
“This initiative is a significant step toward preparing our students for the future,” said Dr. Louis Algaze, president and CEO of Florida Virtual School. “By providing access to cutting-edge technologies and interactive learning environments, we are equipping our students with the skills they need to succeed in a rapidly evolving world.”
NCS and FLVS leaders entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Dec. 5 at the Orange County Convention Center, during a ceremony at the Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation, and Education Conference (I/ITSEC) to mark the beginning of this collaborative effort.
“We are thrilled to embark on this innovative partnership to bring new technologies and resources to our students,” said Beth Brunner, FLVS Foundation executive director. “This initiative supports our commitment to academic excellence and ensures that our students are well-prepared to meet the evolving demands of the workforce with the essential skills needed for high-demand careers.”
To kick off the partnership, NCS will spearhead a series of virtual workshops for a cohort of FLVS teachers, offering comprehensive guidance on incorporating Modeling, Simulation, and Training (MS&T) concepts across various grade levels and subjects.
“The partnership between NCS and the FLVS Foundation exemplifies a model for collaborative STEM education,” said Lindsey Spalding, director of workforce development for NCS. “By integrating resources and expertise from the Department of Defense’s STARBASE program, Team Orlando, academia, and industry, we aim to empower and benefit Florida’s future workforce.”
“NCS is excited about this agreement with FLVS which will expand our already successful STARBASE program,” said George Cheros, president and CEO of NCS. “Our programs have touched almost 3,000 fifth grade students since 2021, ranging from disadvantaged to honors students; for some, it’s an introduction to STEM and MS&T. We’re proud to continue to inspire their love of MS&T.”
This innovative approach to STEM workforce development benefits both educators and students, reinforcing the FLVS Foundation’s commitment to hands-on, career-ready STEM learning.
