FLVS Offers Convenient, Comprehensive Driver Education Course that Meets New State Law
July 17, 2025

Florida Virtual School can help families navigate the new teen driver education law with their fully online Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) approved Driver Education course. For the past 20 years, nearly one million students have taken the FLVS Driver Education course, providing students and families with an effective way to meet the new driver education requirement.
For more than 20 years, Florida Virtual School (FLVS) has been a trusted leader in online driver education, equipping Florida students with the skills they need to drive safely. Now, as a new state law takes effect August 1 (previously July 1) requiring that anyone under 18 years old complete a Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) approved driver education course, FLVS is uniquely positioned to help students meet the mandate with its time-tested, flexible program taught by certified teachers. Previously, the law only required anyone under the age of 18 to complete a Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) course.
With nearly one million students served through its Driver Education course since 2006, FLVS brings unmatched experience, flexibility, and convenience to help students meet the new mandate.
“We understand that high school students and families are balancing multiple priorities, and adding a Driver Education course to their plans shouldn’t be a challenge,” said Florida Virtual School Chief Academic Officer Robin Winder. “That’s why our fully online course offers the flexibility and accessibility students need to meet this requirement seamlessly.”
In addition to the flexibility offered by the FLVS Driver Education course, which is available to students in the district’s FLVS Full Time school option, as well as students enrolled in the FLVS Flex option (individual courses), students can earn 0.5 elective credit toward high school graduation and can start the course right away.
A key feature of the FLHSMV-approved FLVS Driver Education course is the personalized instruction students receive. State-certified and passionate teachers provide one-on-one support throughout the course, ensuring each student has the tailored support they need to succeed. Students who complete the Driver Education course with FLVS can also take the Learner’s License exam online for free.
Upon successful completion of the FLVS Driver Education course and earning a learner’s license, students are encouraged to gain practical driving experience through behind-the-wheel instruction. FLVS partners with many counties across Florida to provide students access to free or low-cost driving lessons. Timing, availability, and program details vary by county, and FLVS helps connect students and families with the appropriate local resources based on their place of residence.
The FLVS Driver Education course is tuition-free for most Florida students; however, state law requires that students receiving state-funded scholarships use their scholarship funds to cover the cost of the course.
