FLVS Students Excel in ‘AI in Math’ Enrichment Program

First student cohort shows strong gains in artificial intelligence confidence and skills; students can now sign up for fall 2025

More than 80 Algebra 1 Florida Virtual School (FLVS) students in sixth-11th-grade completed the first-ever “AI in Math” enrichment program, developed in partnership with the University of Florida (UF) and the Concord Consortium, and WestEd in June 2025. The pilot cohort showed measurable gains in AI literacy, math motivation, and confidence.
The program, first announced in March, was designed to introduce students in the district’s individual course option (FLVS Flex) to foundational AI concepts through interactive, math-based activities. Students built sentiment analysis models using algebraic expressions, explored ethical AI use, and learned about careers in AI—all while reinforcing key math skills.
To measure students' AI literacy and self-efficacy, the AI in Math program included a pre-and post-assessment. Preliminary analysis showed that students who completed the learning module experienced a significant boost in both their confidence in understanding AI and their interest in math. Before the module, students rated their AI knowledge confidence at 3.38 out of 5, which increased to 3.88 afterward. Their motivation for math also grew, with scores rising from 3.73 to 3.92.
Students also demonstrated a better grasp of key AI concepts, such as understanding that AI is designed to achieve goals and that it relies on large datasets. Overall, the pilot study showed that integrating AI into math education not only builds students' confidence in both subjects but also makes learning more exciting and connected to the real world.
One middle school student said his favorite part of the program was learning about different careers that use AI. He said, “AI can go into a bunch of different positions and help out with those jobs. Not just math-related, but a lot of different jobs. I was surprised to see it could be integrated into those jobs.”
Another student added, “[It was] interesting to learn about how AI is used. We don’t learn anything similar to this in regular Algebra class.”
The 10-hour course included a pre-survey, interactive online module, and post-survey, with optional video conferencing office hours and interviews. Student feedback helped refine the program for fall 2025.
Starting Sept. 1, FLVS Flex students currently taking Algebra 1 Segment 1 can sign up to participate in the ‘AI in Math’ supplemental enrichment program. The last day to sign up is Sept. 30. Students who complete the course will receive an “Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Math” certificate from the University of Florida.
