More than 53,600 students completed Florida Virtual School's Driver Education course during the 2025-26 school year, as Florida teens adjusted to new state requirements for obtaining a learner's license.
The milestone comes as National Teen Driver Safety Week highlights the risks young drivers face and the importance of developing safe driving behaviors before getting behind the wheel. The FLVS Teen Driver Safety Club is sponsoring several events in recognition of National Teen Driver Safety Week.
Florida's driver education requirements changed in 2025, requiring teens under 18 to complete a state-approved driver education course before obtaining a learner's license. Approved by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, the FLVS Driver Education course meets the requirement, providing foundational instruction in safe and responsible driving.
The course covers traffic laws, road safety, defensive driving techniques, and responsible decision-making. Students also participate in simulated driving activities that allow them to practice applying what they learn in realistic situations.
"Learning to drive is a significant milestone, and with that milestone comes important responsibilities," said Deborah Adams, instructional leader at FLVS. "Quality driver education helps students develop the knowledge, awareness, and decision-making skills needed to navigate real-world situations and build safe habits on the road."
The course is available through individual courses (FLVS Flex) to Florida students enrolled in public, private, charter, and home education programs.
"Not every student has access to driver education through their local school," said Derek Stewart, driver education coordinator for FLVS. "Through FLVS Flex, students across Florida can learn the fundamentals of safe driving, regardless of where they attend school or how they receive their education."
Since its launch, more than 1 million students have completed Driver Education through FLVS.
