Day in the Life of a Florida Virtual High School Student
By: D'Liyah L., 2022-23 ninth grade vice president of the Florida Virtual High School Student Government
Hi everyone! My name is D’Liyah L., and I am a current 10th grader at Florida Virtual High School. I served as the 2022-23 ninth grade vice president of the Florida Virtual High School Student Government. I am also part of the AICE Cambridge program and the National Society of High School Scholars. Outside of school, I like to sing, write, and dance. In this blog, I’m going to take you through my typical day as a Florida Virtual High School online student.
Rise and Shine
After getting ready for the day (making my bed, brushing my teeth, washing my face, and doing my hair), I look at my motivation wall to get me started and in the mood for the day. I also like to listen to music. Some of the songs that I like to play in the morning are “Hero” by Mariah Carey, “Because You Loved Me” by Celine Dion, “My Shot” from the Hamilton Musical, and “Vivir Mi Vida” by Marc Anthony.
Then it’s breakfast time! It’s a very important meal of the day, so I make sure to eat in the morning. I normally like to get a bowl of honey-oat cereal but sometimes I will switch it up and make pancakes and eggs or oatmeal with granola. Once I’m done with breakfast, I start my school day around 8 a.m.
Time for Class
Before I open my laptop, I look at my planner to see my schedule for the day. I track my live lessons, student government tasks, and extracurricular activities in the section where you see the whole month. After, I open laptop and sign into the Florida Virtual School (FLVS) portal. Then, I click on the first class that I have for the day and start working on the live lesson. I make sure to take notes as I go through the lesson (I prefer to type and print my notes because writing my notes takes a lot more time).
PRO TIP: Participate a lot in your live lessons. For me, participating helps me grasp the concept better because I’m able to remember the conversation that I had with my teacher or another student and connect it to the lesson or question at hand.
Lunch Break
For most of the week, my live lessons end before lunch. But there is one day that I have a live lesson at 2 p.m., so I take a break around noon and then I make lunch and eat at two. After lunch, I either attend my live lesson or finish my work for the day.
Student Government
As a student government officer, there are socials that we host at 12:30 p.m. On these days, I plan extra time in my schedule because we join earlier to set up the music and presentation. Before that, the officers that are going to present that meeting meet up and discuss the rundown. When I have to meet up with a fellow officer, we compare schedules and find a time that works for us. We are productive during that meeting and aim to get the presentations done.
PRO TIP: While you’re in school, make sure that you are attentive, and for any assignment that you don’t understand – ask your teacher. That is what they’re there for!
Being a Florida Virtual High School online student is super fun, especially if you can manage your schedule correctly. I make sure that I take breaks and celebrate my accomplishments that way I am not overwhelmed with all the work that I have to do, and I recommend you do the same!
