Student Health and Wellness
In addition to comprehensive mental wellness services, Florida Virtual School prioritizes the physical health and safety of students. Student Health and Wellness specializes in providing quality educational experiences to students with medical conditions.
In accordance with state mandates, we promote the establishment of safety plans for students with medical conditions. Safety plans and management plans are documents that outline steps and procedures staff and emergency personnel must take if a student were to experience severe symptoms related to their medical conditions. Starting the 2023-2024 school year, we are requesting the following safety and management plans to be on file for students:
- Individual Seizure Action Plan (ISAP)
- Diabetes Management Plan (DMP)
Individual Seizure Action Plan (ISAP)
Florida Statutes s. 1006.0626(2)(b), F.S., prioritizes the safety of students with epilepsy and seizure disorders and mandates schools to have an established Individual Seizure Action Plan (ISAP) plan on file for these students.
An Individual Seizure Action Plan (ISAP) must be developed by a medical professional in consultation with parents and signed by both individuals. This action plan must include specified information such as recommended care, symptoms, accommodations, prescribed rescue medication, and contact information for medical assistance. There are seizure action plan templates that can be found online, or ISAPs can be a written document created with your healthcare provider. Click here for an approved sample of a Seizure Action Plan (PDF)
You may exercise your parental right to decline having an ISAP on file for your student. If you decline submitting an ISAP, please print and sign this form (PDF) and send it to our Student Health and Wellness Coordinator at [email protected]. Please note that if your student were to experience a seizure around school personnel, 911 and emergency services will be contacted.
Diabetes Management Plan (DMP)
In accordance with the Florida Department of Health and Florida Department of Education, a diabetes management plan is to promote the highest level of safety and success for students with diabetes.
A Diabetes Management Plan is recommended to be developed by a medical professional in consultation with parents and signed by both parties. This management plan must include specified information such as recommended care for low and high blood glucose levels, symptoms of low and high blood glucose, any necessary accommodations, prescribed medication, insulin dosing, and contact information for medical assistance. There are diabetes management plan templates that can be found online, or DMPs can be a written document created with your healthcare provider. You may exercise your parental right to decline having an DMP on file for your student. If you decline submitting an DMP, please print and sign this form and send it to our Student Health and Wellness Coordinator at [email protected]. Please note that if your student were to experience severe symptoms related to their diabetes around school personnel, 911 and emergency services will be contacted.
Other FAQs
Most of our students participate in end of year testing at in-person testing locations across Florida. Due to the nature of the medical condition, it is important for school staff to be aware of the student’s diagnosis and what necessary steps they will need to take to ensure the student’s safety. Virtual teachers who have frequent interaction with these students will also know who to contact if they should witness the student experience severe symptoms related to their condition.
Once we have received the document, necessary school personnel will be notified of the unique health care services required by the student and how to respond in emergency situations. School personnel include staff who have regular contact with a student who has an individualized wellness plan and the school nurse or trained staff at in-person testing locations. The notification of the active plan will include the student's condition, information from the plan on how to provide the recommended care if symptoms of the condition are present, and parental and emergency contact information.
You may email our Student Health and Wellness Coordinator at [email protected] with your completed plan. The plan will be uploaded to the student’s file. The plan will remain in effect until a parent submits a revised plan.
Please contact our Student Health and Wellness Coordinator with information detailing your student’s medical condition. If the student needs any academic accommodations, a referral to the 504 team may be entered.
