Description

You see digital art every day, and in M/J Digital Art & Design 1, you not only will investigate digital art, but you’ll learn how to create it yourself! In this course, you will explore the tools, basic concepts, and techniques artists use to create digital art. You'll learn how to use computers, digital cameras, editing software, and more to create digital artworks and grow artistically as you evaluate and respond to your own work.

Major Topics and Concepts: Segment 1 

identify digital art and explore how technology has shaped it

recognize how artists respect copyright laws and intellectual property

identify line and shape and the elements of art and practice creating them in a digital art software

analyze the meaning or purpose of a work of art

identify file types

explore layers in a digital art software and use them in a digital image with shapes and lines

use the artistic process to create digital art, take photographs, edit a photograph and a digital drawing

demonstrate the use of line and shape in a digital image

create an artist statement to reflect on your work

identify texture and space and practice creating them in a digital art software

analyze the meaning or purpose of a work of art

explore how to take digital photographs

experiment with lighting, composition, texture, and space in a photograph

reflect on and apply feedback to one of your digital images

identify color and value and practice creating them in a digital software

experiment with editing digital photographs

demonstrate the use of color and value in edited photographs

identify form and create it in a digital art software

experiment with digital drawing tools

brainstorm ideas and plan for a digital drawing

demonstrate the use of color and value in edited photographs

identify variety and movement

practice creating movement in a digital art software

experiment with editing and adding to digital photographs

use the artistic process to edit original photographs and combine them into one file

demonstrate the use of variety and movement in an edited image

create an artist statement to reflect on your work

identify proportion and balance and practice creating them in a digital software

experiment with typography in a digital art software

use the artistic process to use typography to create an image

demonstrate the use of proportion, balance, and typography to create an image

reflect on and apply feedback to one of your digital images

identify emphasis and pattern and practice creating them in a digital software

analyze the meaning or purpose of a work of art

identify what makes up a logo and experiment with designing one

explore career opportunities in digital art

use the artistic process to create a logo that demonstrates the use of emphasis and pattern

identify rhythm and unity and practice creating them in a digital software

experiment with digital collage tools

 

Student-Supplied Resources 

Students need to supply the following materials to complete the coursework:

  • Disk space on your computer as well as an external device to back up your files (flash drive, external hard drive, etc.) 
  • Word processing program (Microsoft Word or similar) 
  • digital camera or cellphone to take photographs
  • a stylus or drawing pen* *optional

 

Students will be given a range of materials and options to complete assignments:

  • digital sketchbook
  • digital editing/drawing program (raster graphics editor)

Besides engaging students in challenging curriculum, the course guides students to reflect on their learning and evaluate their progress through a variety of assessments. Assessments can be in the form of practice lessons, multiple-choice questions, writing assignments, projects, research papers, oral assessments, and discussions. This course will use the state-approved grading scale. Each course contains a mandatory final exam or culminating project that will be weighted at 20% of the students’ overall grade.
