Enrollment for Florida Virtual Full Time Public Schools now open for second semester

Updated Nov. 12, 2024:  As families continue to evaluate their education options for second semester, Florida Virtual School (FLVS) has extended the application deadline for the full time option for students in grades K-8 to Nov. 22. The deadline is Nov. 15 for students in ninth through 12th grades.

ORLANDO, Fla. (Nov. 4, 2024) — Enrollment for Florida Virtual Full Time Public Schools (FLVS Full Time) is now open for the second semester. Florida Virtual School (FLVS) has extended the application deadline for the full time option for students in grades K-8 to Nov. 22. The deadline is Nov. 15 for students in ninth through 12th grades.

With FLVS Full Time, students in Kindergarten-12th grade have access to more than 200 online courses, 80 clubs, one-on-one support from state-certified teachers, and the structure of a traditional 180-day school calendar paired with the flexibility of online learning. The second semester runs from Jan. 9 to May 29, 2025.

“Our FLVS Full Time teachers and instructional support teams ensure that every student has the resources, guidance, and opportunities they need to thrive,” said Katie Santana, senior director of instruction for FLVS Full Time. “Through teacher support and a wide range of student activities, our goal is to support students’ academic growth and social development, ensuring families feel empowered at every step of their learning journey.”

According to a National School Choice Week survey, 72% of parents across the U.S. explored new school options for their children last year, seeking tailored, flexible learning environments that fit their child’s academic needs and family lifestyle. As a leader in online learning, FLVS Full Time creates a vibrant online learning community where students, after completing graduation requirements, may be granted a stated-issued Florida diploma by Florida Virtual School.

A traditional school experience in a flexible environment

FLVS Full Time follows a traditional 180-day calendar school year (August-May), offering the same structure as brick-and-mortar schools. Students take a standard six-course load each semester, with access to more than 200 online courses. These courses include:

  • Core (regular and advanced/honors)
  • Electives
  • World Languages
  • Advanced Placement (AP)
  • Career and Technical Education (CTE)
  • Cambridge Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE) program
  • Dual enrollment

All courses are developed specifically for the online learning environment and are taught by state-certified teachers who guide students to success through personalized instruction and one-on-one support. These courses can be completed on students’ schedules and are available 24 hours, seven days a week, allowing maximum flexibility to meet each student’s needs.

Robust support and social engagement opportunities

Key support pillars for students in FLVS Full Time include:

  • Certified teachers and one-on-one support: Teachers work closely with students, providing personalized instruction, engaging, interactive lessons, and live, real-time support.
  • Advisement and counseling services: School counselors and exceptional student services (ESE) staff offer individualized guidance for academic planning, college and career readiness, and personal growth, helping students build confidence and prepare for future success.
  • Social engagement through clubs and events: Students connect with peers across the state through virtual clubs, collaborative team projects, and exciting in-person field trips and meet-ups. These activities foster both friendship and essential life skills such as teamwork, communication, and leadership.

Proven success and academic excellence

FLVS Full Time consistently upholds excellence in student achievement:

  • Graduation success: The 2022-23 graduation rate climbed to 92.6%, placing FLVS among Florida's top 10 non-lab school districts.
  • Class of 2024 excellence: More than half of the Class of 2024’s 1,163 graduates earned a grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 or higher – exceeding the national GPA average of 3.0.
  •  Cambridge AICE performance: FLVS students outperformed international AICE test-takers in 8 out of 11 courses in 2023-24, with 91% passing AICE English General Paper 1 compared to 74% internationally.
  • Statewide assessment success: FLVS Full Time students ranked among the best in Florida on the Florida Assessments of Student Thinking (FAST) progress monitoring and End-of-Course (EOC) assessments, placing in the top 10 non-lab school districts in the state for all core subject areas, including English Language Arts (ELA), U.S. History, Biology 1, Algebra 1, and Civics.

In addition to the full time public school option, students can sign up for individual courses through FLVS Flex. FLVS Flex offers year-round enrollment and the flexibility to select courses based on their families’ schedule and interests.
