NEW Course Helps Students Meet Statewide Graduation Requirement
Developed By An Award-Winning Curriculum Development Team, Florida Students Can Take the Required Course Online to Achieve Financial Stability
Florida Virtual School (FLVS) launched a new Personal Finance and Money Management course for high school students enrolled in FLVS Flex, the option that allows both traditional school and homeschool students to supplement their learning with individual courses. This comprehensive course, now a graduation requirement by the state of Florida, aims to empower students with essential skills for managing their finances and making informed financial decisions.
The Personal Finance and Money Management course is a response to the growing need for students to have practical financial knowledge, particularly in the ever-evolving landscape of personal finance. With the course now a statewide requirement for students who entered high school as freshmen this school year, FLVS equips the next generation with the knowledge and tools necessary to navigate the complexities of managing money and planning for their financial futures.
The course covers topics such as personal financial literacy and money management, including instruction on types of bank accounts, credit scores, taxes, and managing debt. Students will learn about money management using real-life scenarios and develop the skills needed to become wise consumers, savers, investors, and planners. It is available in two formats, catering to diverse student needs, with options for both regular and honors-level participation.
“A solid foundation in personal financial literacy is critical for our students’ success beyond the classroom,” said Misty Mizzoni, Curriculum Development Senior Manager for Florida Virtual School. “By taking this course, they can build their financial literacy skills to excel in today’s global workforce and society.”
Key features of the new course include:
- Interactive Learning Modules: The course utilizes engaging learning modules that cover a wide range of topics, including financial attitudes and behaviors, budgeting, financial investing, credit, and more.
- Real-World Applications: Students will apply their money management skills to real-world scenarios, ensuring that the knowledge learned in the course is immediately applicable to their lives.
- Certified Online Teachers: Taught by experienced educators and subject-matter experts, the course provides students with valuable insights, practical advice, and the opportunity for one-to-one teacher/student interactions.
- Adaptability for Online Learning: Developed specifically for the online environment, the course accommodates the flexible learning needs of today’s students, allowing them to access the content at their own pace.
The award-winning Florida Virtual School curriculum team develops each course specifically for the online learning environment to increase student success. Due to this dedication, FLVS students consistently outperform state and national averages on Advanced Placement and End-of-Course (EOC) exams. Based on the 2022-23 EOC assessments, FLVS students outperformed state averages on U.S. History and Biology 1 by 12%.
With more than 190 comprehensive and effective courses, 60 fun and exciting clubs, and dedicated one-to-one support from certified teachers, Florida Virtual School provides families with a safe, reliable, and flexible education in a supportive environment.
Families interested in taking the Personal Finance and Money Management course with Florida Virtual School can enroll today with FLVS Flex. The course will be released through Florida Virtual Full Time Public School later this year.
